Derek Van Dam (b. Oct. 7, 1983) is a well-known American meteorologist working for CNN News as their weather anchor and reporter based in Atlanta, Georgia.
Raised in Grand Rapids in Michigan, Derek attended Central Michigan University and majored in Meteorology and Broadcast Cinematic Arts.
At CNN, Derek mostly gives weather broadcasts and science updates on weekday and weekend editions of CNN Newsroom. He is also an American Meteorological Society certified Meteorologist.
He was previously praised for enhancing the quality and standards of weather broadcasting across the African continent in his prior job as Chief Meteorologist at eNCA. While anchoring daily weather briefings for the station’s major news broadcasts, he led a team of seven meteorologists and climatologists.
Derek’s charitable work with The Compassionate Life Foundation, a non-governmental organization established in the United States, is what originally took him to Southern Africa. He fell in love with the place and moved to Cape Town in 2008 to seek a unique position in his field: creating South Africa’s first 24-hour news station.

He also participated in CNN’s unique live coverage of the 2017 solar eclipse from Tennessee 2017. The team’s virtual reality coverage of The Eclipse of the Century received an Edward R.
